PURSUE SOLUTIONS TO COMMON CONCERNS
Events are an example
of a common concern:
As artists we have the imperative to create and share. As a community we have established (through a variety of live/work warehouses) a forum for artists to exhibit their work to audiences. We must continue to build this capacity and guarantee it’s continuation.
Common Threats faced by warehouses

PROBLEM |
PROPOSED SOLUTION |
|
Liability for
Injury: if someone gets hurt at an
event, they can sue the leaseholder. |
Institute waivers à purchase insurance for all events (pending
funding) |
|
Public Event Permits: required to request police permission 30
days in advance for public gatherings.
|
Have events for members only ($5 membership gets you in
the door plus invitations to upcoming fundraisers) |
|
Alcohol Sales: non-permitted sales of alcohol and underage
drinking can carry penalties for which individuals and/or leaseholders can be
held liable. |
Nonprofits can file ABC-221for permission to sell alcohol
for public events, OR drinks can be provided to members on a suggested
donation basis. All events w/alcohol
MUST check ID’s. |
|
Noise, Parking,
Security: we affect and are
affected by our environment – can attract negative attention if we don’t
communicate with neighbors. |
Communicate with neighbors regularly regarding nonprofit
activity. Encourage designated driver
car-pools and bikes. Gardens, murals,
recycling. |
|
Building up to Code: We must assess where we need to make
improvements for health and safety and where the current permitting process
is onerous/irrelevant. |
Establish relationships with contractors, public officials
and city employees to address these concerns. |
